UW-Extension Publication: On-Site Water Reuse Systems
Wisconsin is relatively a water-rich state. However, as population growth and expanding industries continue to increase our state’s thirst, water conservation has become vital. Excessive pumping of groundwater can threaten the health of nearby springs, streams and wetlands. While water-saving technologies have helped to reduce the amount that we use on a daily basis, reusing water can also cut down on consumption.
Using water to perform more than one function enables us to get the most out of every drop. Such water reuse can also save money, energy and our future water supply.
The concept of on-site water reuse is simple: recycling usable water that otherwise just goes down the drain. This water is then reused for other purposes in or around your home or facility that do not require as high-quality a grade of water. An example of this would be with the appropriate treatment, water generated from showers, bathroom sinks, and clothes washers or rainwater collected from roof areas could be used to supply water to flush toilets or to irrigate lawns and landscaping. Not only households, but many businesses are well suited for water reuse and could see significant benefits by investing in the practice. The main issue to be considered is health and hygiene.
UW-Extension has a publication, On-Site Water Reuse Systems (G3882) that describes these systems in detail including safety, regulations and how to get started if you wish to install such a system.
