Oregon Public Library Seeks Wood For Community Inspired Library Circulation Desk

The Wood Cycle of Wisconsin on Fish Hatchery Road in Oregon and the Oregon Public Library have cooked up a novel idea to replace the library’s worn out circulation desk by inviting people to donate pieces of wood from area trees.

Paul Morrison, owner of The Wood Cycle, will handcraft a community desk using a variety of woods from Southern Dane County that area residents contribute in time for the l00th anniversary of the library in October.

“The closer the ties to Oregon, the better, “ Morrison said. “Since every piece of wood has an interesting story behind it, we are also asking residents to fill out a form telling about the wood and where it came from. For some it may be the backyard tree that collapsed in a storm, for others it may be that stack of boards in the garage that was passed down from grandpa’s farm, but never put to use. ”

Susan Sanner, director of the Oregon Public Library said the library will produce a booklet about the wood pieces, based on the stories that donors tell.

The final chapter unfolds October 9 when the community inspired circulation desk, a functional custom crafted art piece meant to last forever, will be unveiled at the library’s centennial birthday party.

Hardwood lumber can be dropped off at The Wood Cycle, 1239 S. Fish Hatchery Road or call 835-3656 for more information.
