Buy the same leaf mulch used in Madison’s award-winning Olbrich Botanical Gardens for your home garden. Leaf mulch is a natural product that reduces weeds, conserves water, and fertilizes the soil. This leaf mulch is available only through Olbrich. Leaf mulch is beneficial for annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, and in vegetable gardens. All proceeds from the sale benefit Olbrich Gardens, which uses sustainable gardening methods and provides sustainable gardening education.
Leaf mulch is an easy, natural way to improve any garden. Spreading a layer of leaf mulch in the spring benefits a garden for the rest of the season. Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz endorses the Leaf Mulch Sale at Olbrich Botanical Gardens, emphasizing Olbrich’s leaf mulch as an environmentally sound way to improve your home garden while supporting Olbrich.
Top Ten Reasons to Use Olbrich Leaf Mulch
Natural, environmentally sound way to improve a home garden.
Retains soil moisture, which reduces watering.
Cuts down on weeding.
Adds nutrients to the soil.
Regulates soil temperatures.
Recycles local leaves, keeping leaves out of the lakes. Plus, the City of Madison doesn’t have to transport the leaves to the Dane County compost sites.
Looks great! Leaf mulch creates a chocolate-brown background for plants.
Supports Olbrich Botanical Gardens. All proceeds benefit the Gardens.
Buy a local product. Leaf mulch is made at Olbrich from locally collected leaves.
Good for any type of garden. Great for annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, and vegetable gardens.
“Our leaf mulch is a big contributor to our success in growing most groups of plants at the Gardens,” says Jeff Epping, Olbrich’s Director of
Horticulture. The mulch used at Olbrich is made from leaves collected in the fall by the City of Madison. After composting over the winter at the Gardens, the leaves are ground and bagged in early spring. This process saves the city from transporting the leaves to the Dane County compost sites and provides an environmentally sound product. “We’re recycling the leaves from our city’s own urban forest, not trucking mulch from halfway across the country,” says Epping.
At Olbrich, a three to four inch layer of mulch is applied to the garden beds. “The majority of the mulching is done in the spring just after perennial dividing or annual planting,” says Epping.
