Novelist Victor Hugo’s classic story of Jean Valjean at the turn of 19th-century France. Paroled for stealing bread, homeless, and once again desperate, he is stunned by an act of compassion that rekindles his own, only to be dogged by a policeman whose obsession proves that “the spirit heals, but the letter kills.”
